Qupe Chardonnay Reserve Bien Nacido Block 11

This wine is 100% Chardonnay from Block Eleven, a custom, hillside planting at Bien Nacido, planted exclusively for QupT in 1997. The aromas show minerals, custard, a bit of flinty lees and lots of juice fruit. This is a mouth coating wine, but it still sits lively on the palate. Drink this over the next few years.

Qupe Chardonnay Y Block

This wine is 100% Chardonnay from Bien Nacido Vineyard. ôY Blockö is an older Chardonnay block on the gravely banks of the Cuyama River just opposite the winery. A more opulent fruit component - bits of pear, mango and pineapple show up, along with nice creamy oak with slightly softer acidity. Drink over the next 5 years.

Qupe Los Olivos Cuvee

This wine is 53% Syrah, 27% MourvFdre and 20% Grenache. This is Qupe's 14th vintage of this wine and certainly one of the best. This is a Southern Rh(ne style blend, but Los Olivos is cooler than the Southern Rh(ne yielding a more elegant, balanced wine. The aroma shows a lot of berry and wild cherry with classic gaminess from the MourvFdre and uplifted fruit from the Grenache. The mouth feel is almost Pinot Noir like, with sweet, rich fruit and a snappy, clean finish. This wine should age gracefully for 5-10 years.

Qupe Marsanne

This wine is 57% Marsanne from Ibarra-Young Vineyard, 18% Marsanne from Purisima Mountain Vineyards and 18% Roussanne from Stolpman Vineyard all in the Santa Ynez Valley near Los Olivos. The remaining 7% Roussanne comes from the Tables Creek Vineyard in Western Paso Robles. The aromas lead off with minerals, flint and hints of peach and herb. The flavors are persistent with good fresh acidity and balanced (13%) alcohol.

Qupe Roussanne Bien Nacido Hillside Estate

This wine is whole cluster pressed, the juice is chilled overnight, then went straight to barrel with most of the lees. The wine was completely barrel fermented and put through malo. It was aged 16 months in the same barrels with the first 11 months on the lees without racking. 285 cases were bottled without filtration in March 2005. This is a big, exotic wine and a classic representation of Roussanne. The aromas show honeysuckle, orange rind, almonds, minerals and a hint of smokiness thatÆs inherent to Roussanne and complemented by the oak. The flavors show much of the same with a big robe of fruit and great acidity.

Qupe Syrah Bien Nacido

This wine is 100% Syrah from two different blocks at Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a fragrant perfume of Asian spices, incense, blackberries, and cassis. This wine is 100% syrah from the Z block at Bien Nacido vineyard. Z block is the original custom hillside block at Bien Nacido, planted exclusively for growing cool climate syrah û southwest facing slope to get plenty of sun and poor soil that drains well and stresses the vines. This is a pretty, showy Hillside syrah. similar to the æ97 with its forward fruit, but this oneÆs more restrained. It also has some of the cola-spiceö aromatics that was evident in the 98. It's very drinkable now, but it has a lot of staying power. In ranking this vintage against the other Hillside syrahs going back to the first in æ94, this one would be at or near the top.
